Definition of Wire Gauge in Square Millimeters
The cross-sectional area is expressed in square millimeters based on the diameter. For household electricity, wires ranging from 1 square millimeter to 6 square millimeters are generally used.
1.5 square millimeters, primarily used for lighting circuits;
2.5 square millimeters, primarily used for lighting, outlet switches, and grounding.
4 square meters, primarily used for water heaters and air conditioners;
6 square meters, primarily used for return lines;
10 square meters or more, primarily used for the main incoming line;
Wire Selection Tips
(1) Appearance: Smooth and well‑rounded, with even coloration. The insulating rubber and copper core are tightly bonded and not easily peeled apart. While low‑quality rubber may appear thick, when pressed firmly, the compressed area turns white; over time, it is prone to aging and delamination, leading to electrical leakage.
(2) Eccentricity: If the rubber coating is uniformly thin around the entire circumference, and the copper core is centered within the wire, then the eccentricity is low.
(3) Flame Retardancy: Use a lighter to burn the rubber coating; when the lighter is moved away from the wire, the wire should automatically extinguish and emit a small amount of white smoke. If the flame spreads and a large amount of white smoke is released, it indicates that the rubber coating is of poor quality.
(4) Copper Core: High‑purity copper cores are resistant to aging and boast high conductivity. Counterfeit or substandard cores tend to be yellowish or whitish and contain impurities. To test, simply rub a sheet of white paper against the copper core; if black residue appears on the paper, it indicates that the copper core contains a significant amount of impurities.
Markings: Whether there is a complete certificate of conformity, including the “CCC” mark, rated voltage, length, date, manufacturer’s name and address, and other complete information.
(5) Thickness: The dimensions of low‑quality copper cores are often smaller than those of products from reputable manufacturers, while the outer insulation layer is thicker; the deviation in wire cross‑sectional diameter must not exceed 0.02%.
(6) Length: The length of wire and cable products complies with the national standard of 100 ± 0.5 m (i.e., 100 meters is the standard, with an allowable deviation of 0.5 meters).
(7) Weight: For a full reel of wire (100 meters), the weight must be no less than 1,871 grams for 1.5 mm², no less than 2,915 grams for 2.5 mm², no less than 4,312 grams for 4 mm², and no less than 6,107 grams for 6 mm².
