A Brief Discussion on the Causes of Overheating in Wires and Cables

Release time: 2020-07-09

Overview: A cable featuring polyethylene as the insulating material—commonly referred to as PE cable—is a type of extruded insulation cable. PE cables can be used in power cable circuits across a wide range of voltage levels. Typically, PE cables boast high dielectric strength, a high insulation resistance coefficient, a low dissipation factor, a light specific gravity, excellent moisture resistance and processing performance. As we all know, wires and cables tend to heat up during operation; as the load current continuously increases, the ambient temperature around the wires and cables rises accordingly. If this issue is not addressed in a timely manner, once the temperature exceeds a certain threshold, it can have adverse effects on the wires and cables. To effectively address the problem of overheating in wires and cables, we must first understand the root causes behind it. 1. Conductor Resistance Does Not Meet Specifications This is one of the most common reasons for wire and cable overheating. When conductor resistance fails to meet specified standards, it can lead to excessive heating during cable operation. 2. Incorrect Cable Model Selection Poor cable model selection can result in an undersized conductor cross‑section, causing the cable to operate under heavy load conditions. Over time, uneven heat dissipation and thermal management within the cable can lead to overheating. 3. Poor Quality of Connection Joints If connection joints are not properly manufactured or are inadequately crimped, the contact resistance at the interface may become excessively high, leading to overheating in the cable. 4. Excessive Cable Bundling When cables are installed in overly compact bundles, their ventilation and heat dissipation capabilities are significantly reduced. Alternatively, if cables are placed too close to other heat sources, their normal heat dissipation is compromised—both scenarios can cause the cables to overheat during operation. 5. Damage to the Protective Sheath Damage to the armor‑plated cable’s protective sheath can allow moisture to penetrate, gradually degrading the dielectric properties of the insulation. As a result, the insulation resistance decreases over time, which can also lead to overheating during cable operation. In daily life, if you notice that wires or cables are overheating, and you are unable to identify the cause within a short period, it is crucial to promptly contact qualified personnel to inspect and resolve the issue on-site—before a potential fire accident occurs. It also offers advantages such as ease of processing.

A cable in which polyethylene polymer is used as the insulation material and is extruded around the conductor is known as a PE cable. PE cables can be employed in power cable circuits across a wide range of voltage levels. Commonly used PE cables feature high dielectric strength, a high insulation resistance coefficient, a low dissipation factor, a light specific gravity, excellent moisture resistance and processing performance. As we all know, wires and cables tend to heat up during operation; as the load current continues to increase, the ambient temperature around the wires and cables rises accordingly. If this issue is not addressed in a timely manner, once the temperature exceeds a certain threshold, it can have adverse effects on the wires and cables. To effectively address the problem of overheating in wires and cables, we must first understand the root causes behind it.

1. The conductor resistor does not comply with the regulations.

This is a common cause of overheating in wires and cables; if the conductor’s resistance does not meet the specified requirements, it can lead to heating during operation.

2. Model does not match

Poor cable selection results in an undersized conductor cross‑section for the cables used, leading to overload conditions during operation. Over time, uneven heat generation and dissipation within the cables cause overheating.

3. Poor connector quality

The connection head manufacturing technology is not very good; the fittings do not seal tightly, resulting in excessive contact resistance at the interface, which can also cause the cable to overheat.

4. Overcrowding

When cable lines are installed in overly compact arrangements, the natural ventilation and heat dissipation performance of the heat pipes is poor. Alternatively, if the cables are positioned too close to other heat sources, this can interfere with their normal heat dissipation, potentially leading to overheating during operation.

5. Damaged protective cover

The protective sheath of the armored cable has been damaged, and after water leakage occurs, it can gradually degrade dielectric strength, leading to a gradual reduction in grounding resistance and causing overheating during cable operation.

In daily life, if you notice that wires or cables are overheating, and you’re unable to identify the cause of the problem within a short period of time, it’s crucial to promptly contact personnel to come to the site for inspection and troubleshooting, in order to prevent fire accidents.

Easy to process and other advantages.
